Five fighter jets were shot down in India-Pakistan conflict: Trump

President Trump shared the information about the downing of the warplanes during a dinner with Republican members of Congress at the White House on Friday.

Trump said that as many as five warplanes have been shot down in the India-Pakistan conflict, which began in April after gunmen attacked Indian-controlled Kashmir. The situation calmed down after the ceasefire in May. However, Trump did not specify which side’s warplanes were shot down, India or Pakistan. Without giving any details about the India-Pakistan conflict, Trump said, “Actually, the planes were being shot down out of the sky. Five, five, four or five. But I think five fighter jets were shot down.’

Pakistan has claimed that it shot down five Indian fighter jets during the conflict.

On the other hand, India’s top general said in late May that India changed tactics on the first day in the face of air force losses and was able to stand in a good position before the ceasefire three days later.

India claims that it shot down “a few Pakistani fighter jets”. However, Islamabad has admitted to attacking air bases but denied losing any aircraft. On May 10, Washington held talks with both sides. Then, in a social media announcement, Trump claimed credit for the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. However, disagreeing with Trump’s claim, India said that the ceasefire did not happen due to Trump’s intervention. Even the threat to stop US trade talks has not changed its position.

India’s position is that whatever problems there are between New Delhi and Islamabad, they must be resolved bilaterally, there is no room for outside intervention.

Meanwhile, the US-India relationship is becoming increasingly important in countering China’s influence in Asia, even though Pakistan is a former US ally.
